Restoring the standards of journalism

The Media Audit

Vol. I · No. 1 · Integrity Index edition

Journalism had standards.

Outlets became mouthpieces. Corrections run days after the damage is done. We’re building the platform that audits every article against a constitution of journalism standards and legal precedent, and tells AI assistants who deserves their trust.

Photo shows toddler starving as famine grips Gaza

The 18-month-old weighed a fraction of a healthy child his age, health officials said, as aid groups warned of mass starvation across the enclave.

His mother says she can no longer find food for him. Israel did not respond to a request for comment.

The crisis of trust

If a surgeon errs, one patient dies. If the press misleads on purpose, a nation can be made the object of hatred.
In Rwanda, Radio Télévision Libre des Mille Collines helped incite a genocide. A journalist’s profession is as serious as a surgeon’s. Perhaps more.

As mass-media reach declines, trust is collapsing with it, driven by manipulation, activism, overtly biased positions, and open endorsements of candidates by legacy institutions like The New York Times and The Washington Post.

People have stopped believing in journalism’s standards. Outlets have become mouthpieces for political parties instead of doing their first job: the objective delivery of information.

Since New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, the very idea of media accountability has faded. Outlets were once fined for serious errors; that precedent weakened the standards that held them.

There is no editor above the editors anymore. We are building one.

1,378 articles. Whose numbers did they print?

After October 7, Fifty Global and the HJS analysed coverage from CNN, BBC, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, AP, Reuters and ABC. Every outlet relied on figures from a ministry controlled by Hamas. Almost none used data from Israel, a full democracy by Freedom House’s measure.

Each cell is one percent of publications analysed. Empty cells are the sources nobody asked. Only a marginal share of articles disclosed that Hamas casualty figures are unverifiable — while Israeli figures drew a considerable share of scrutiny.

The paper apologised: We regret the publication of this antisemitic cartoon. It stopped running editorial cartoons in its international edition.

The “starving boy”

A photo of 18-month-old Muhammad Zakariya al-Mutawaki ran as the face of famine in Gaza. HonestReporting noticed a healthy child in the background. CNN and the NYT later confirmed with his mother: a muscular disease, not starvation.

Hamas “takes a big risk”

On a hostage deal, the paper framed the organisation holding civilians captive as “the Palestinian militant group” giving up “leverage”: hostages recast as bargaining chips, kidnappers as risk-takers.

The obituary headline credits the Supreme Leader with building a “regional power”, the network of proxy militias and terror that the source article calls evidence of a systematic worldview.

Viewers have “lost trust” in legacy media.

Audiences are cancelling traditional subscriptions and moving to Grok, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude. The free market has produced a new mechanism: all information in one place. Soon these AI platforms will begin paying outlets for primary information.

That is where we come in. We act as the verification layer, letting AI assistants audit the media they consume. How well an outlet does its job directly determines how much the assistants pay it, or whether they work with it at all.

Community Notes for AI. As with the model Grok has implemented, an assistant could surface our verification data to its users as a premium feature, for an additional monthly fee.
